How did it all start?
As part of the preparations for the celebration of the Millennium in 2000, a scheme was announced to make grants available for communities that planned to create new village greens, which were to be known as Millennium Greens.
Although not short on green space, like many rural communities, we are increasingly short of shared facilities. The residents of Bishops Offley liked and embraced the idea of having our own Green. We accepted a kind opportunity to purchase a field, and once a trust was formed using the legal framework provided by the government, we were up and running.
The residents in our community pulled together in various ways to raise the funds needed in order to qualify for a grant and to prepare The Green itself.
Some Millennium Greens are landscaped and planted; some have buildings or sports pavilions on them; ours though, in keeping with our area, is one of the smaller greens and is mainly an open grassed space. There is a Millennium Stone, benches and picnic benches, and planted trees yet still leaving plenty of open space. A small orchard of 7 fruit trees was planted as part of the Queens Platinum Jubilee.
The Bishops Offley Millennium Green was inaugurated on 1 January 2000 and we're still extremely proud of it to this day!
Who and what is it for?
It's for YOU! In other words, it's for the residents and wider community of Bishops Offley. It is open at all times as a place to walk, meet friends, play games, socialise, or to just sit on a bench and enjoy the countryside, plants and wildlife, peace and quiet. It is also an area for us to come together as a village for events, fun and to share community spirit!
The Beacon was erected for the Queen's Golden Jubilee. We have used it for many other special occasions such as the 200 years Trafalgar Commemoration Day and the Platinum Jubilee making us a part of national celebrations.
